Sedation dentistry is an increasingly popular method of dentistry. It makes dental care more confrontable for the majority of people who are anxious about getting services at the dentist.
While there are several different degrees of sedation: Minimal, Moderate and Deep, we use a type of sedation in our practice called “Conscious Sedation”. Conscious sedation is done using nitrous oxide, and just tends to relax the body and relieve the patient of any anxiety, rather than make the patient fully unconscious.
What are the pros of using sedation?
- Sedatives can quickly and safely calm heightened anxieties or nerves that may be associated with the sheer smell, sight and sounds that come from a dental office.
- More treatments can be accomplished in a simple visit with sedation dentistry, so procedures that would normally take two or three visits can now be completed in a single visit.
- Sedatives can provide relief from jaw and mouth pain, from having to keep their mouth open wide for long periods of time, as well as neck and back pain that can occur from sitting in a dental chair.
